End of blitzreport 18, 693/1370 1691/1953
yappobiscuits wrote:Steambottle, I guess I owe y'all an explanation. See, as some of you probably remember me mentioning before, I'm a serial procrastinator. And the more I procrastinate, the less I want to do whatever it is. So my motivation/inspiration for the ottscars is all but burnt out. It happens all the time with me and projects. I usually end up abandoning things. However, with this, I've started it and I got you all to vote and got you all excited about it so it would be wrong to just give up. So it will be done eventually. I can't say when, but I can't not do it. I could just half-ass it and post the results without all the story stuff, but I'd rather do it properly as I'm also a perfectionist... my perfectionism is part of why I'm a procrastinator actually. I don't like doing things unless I'm sure I can do it well...
So that's how it is. I thought it was almost done and I checked everyday if it's posted.
I'll Wait for it.
And I say this when I have some things in various stages of unfinishedness:
1. Translate BBcode to HTML for mustardtime posting. (good that at least posting works),
2. Archive images that aren't attachment,
3. Release source for the mirror when 1 and 2 are done,
4. A very short film about blitzposting.
5. Something else I can't tell you about yet. It'll be a surprise.

Blitzreport 19, 746/1370, 1391/1994,
but first, as promised earlier,
Spoiler:

A temporal surprise!
So, ont the moon base we were working on some kind of a chronotransponder, or something like that. It can send information from and to the past. Now it's time to test it. Recently, I got an interesting message from the future. I'm not sure if it's written by Balthasar from the future or someone else from the moon base:
. . . hello! can you hear me from the future? . . . Image wrote:Hi, Balthasar from the past! #nd Hi, OTTers# f##m t#e p##t,
I#d like #o prese###you something.##y the time you r#cei#e#th#s messa#e, #t shou#d be r#ady##nd workin##

##################################nd################ ####### ## # . . . . # . . . . . . . . . . # . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
..###############oy###########.. . . . . . . . .. .
. .
Hmmm... The message got through, but is heavily distorted. So, ther is a something. Something RELATED propably. But the information about what and where it is did not get through Image. I don't think we can extract this information from this message (unless I'm underestimating the OTT). But there are more messages scheduled. they should arrive soon. We can wait for it. And then ENHANCE!. Or something.

I have a directory "~/xkcd/1190-time/OTT/balthasniping", used for temp files made by a script that tries to extract the images from the {code} block in this post... and with 3,237 files (not counting those I got with the aid of a bot or script), my OTT directory is a bit too seaish to list in a post :P

So we nerdsniped each other.
Also, I thought that that code block was completely ignored
The listing on my botcastle is also seaish. But it can be accessed by the spoiler on the bottom of the mirror.
This is the listing on my other timeaccessor:

It's 2018 again!

balthasar_s wrote: No, just regular ETA:ch*rping mustard. At the place where the server-timeaccessor-botcastle is, everyone went here, where I am now. Nobody stayed there and they propably turned all electricity off. It should work again in a few hours.
ETA: not true. They remember that I need the server. For some reason it stopped updating its IP. I must find out why.

This was time-mustard!

ddclient has a minimal time of 30 seconds between updates. And the last IP update was at... 15:15:35 26-Dec-2018. And the 30 seconds since then have not passed yet.

Recently, there was some mustard and for some short time the botcastle thought that it's 2018 again.
I wonder, why.
magic?
more mustard?
Is the moon in a weird timezone?
Maybe it's related to our experiments with the chronotransponder?
Speaking of which, the last message was completely ignored (nobody even tried to enhance the image?). Not very surprising because it did't reveal almost anything. But there is another one now. I'd just like to remind that there is a seaish ottification waiting to be found.

balthasar "nobody even tried to enhance the image" - Like, gamma? Or maybe blue gamma? Sorry, I never think to do those. Okay, I tried gamma but found nothing in the image. I checked the missing letters and got
Code: Select all
h o a H e ? o? ' ' !
i a u t s e ' ' c f i ' ' d o ' ' g t h r h ' '
r o n r a n p o r
which I don't figure to mean anything either.

I think someone will find out, how, somewhere in the future. And even if nobody does we can still rely on redundance. There will be more of those, just Wait for it.
At firbalthasar "nobody even tried to enhance the image" - Like, gamma? Or maybe blue gamma? Sorry, I never think to do those. Okay, I tried gamma but found nothing in the image. I checked the missing letters and got

Code: Select all
Code: Select all
    h o a H e ? o? ' ' !
    i a u t s e ' ' c f i ' ' d o ' ' g t h r h ' '
    r o n r a n p o r

which I don't figure to mean anything either.st
The letters are missing because of temporal interference. Which is random. Also, the messages Also the messages were longer but only the first part gets through ('#' is one missing character, '.' is a missing fragment of unidentified length. or a real dot, sometimes.). It still means that they made progress in the future because now we're very lucky if we manage to send more than 8 bytes. And there are only 3 people working on it. (they were mentioned in the OTT in a different context).
this. also, this. (746/1370) (1691/1994). # .0 1 2.

Very good. You are interested now. I'm slowly making the thread aware of what's going on since 13.06.2014. And we're closer and closer to the real start of it. But what is this? At the secret moon base we're working on some kind of chronotransponder. Getting arbitrary information from the past is easy and is already implemented. But we're having problems with sending information to the past. Recently we started receiving messages. Probably the moon base from the future is testing the chronotransponder. But the messages are RELATED (did the guys from the moon base become OTTers in the future?). That's why I posted them (posts are linked from my sig) The messages did get through but most of the information of them was lost. Frow what's left I managed to determine that the other guy from the moon base from the future tried to show us an ottification. I wasn't able to find out what and where it is.
There were also images. some pixels were lost. But I managed to ENHANCE them a little. But I still don't know much. (There is a big hint on how to enhance them in the message 3. Also, I noticed something unexpected. When I copied the image from Firefox to Gimp it wasn't enhancable. But when I downloaded it and then opened in gimp it was.)
One of the messages was from farther away in the future when the chronotransponder was working much better. But he doesn't remember what all this was about.

Maybe someone else will be able to find out more. Maybe there will be more of these messages.

ETA: And while I was writing this another one appeared

Message from the future

Postby SilentTimer ? Mon Jul 14, 2014 9:14 pm UTC

Hello,

I just ENHANCED the images balthatimetraveller recieved from the future
and I discovered some messages.
Spoiler:
The ?transparent? sections aren't really transparent but they have an extremely low alpha value which even resisted several ENHANCE attempts of mine. This shows the difficulty of sending messages back into the past. My congratulations to the mad scientists on the moon for getting it through. Are they using self-driving time-bicycles for this? And maybe some of them got stuck in a time-roundaboutloop?

Spoiler:
They are completely transparent. But even when alpha is zero the R, G, and B values are still there. That's why copying doesn't work - the RGB values are lost then.
And ironically, the fact that MS Paint doesn't understand alpha makes it a great enhance tool.

It's all related.

Postby balthasar_s ? Thu Jul 17, 2014 7:38 pm UTC

It's all related!
Some time ago, on the secret base on the moon we were working on an "object generator"& (first mention in 2010). which is a device used for generating all kinds of objects that can be generated by it. I's kind of like a 3d printer but much better.

And now, in the Kieryn's Fractories, in the secret underground base they are working on a "universal constructor" which has exactly the same purpose!

Do you all build such kind of things in your secret bases?

& this may become RELATED somewhere in the future.

I diffed the current version (2014-07-18) against the old one (1014-06-15).
Considering there are 1000 yearsH plus about 792 NP between them,
the difference is remarkably riverish.
This is what I noticed:
  • The JavaScript (in the old version).
  • Source and instructions for the OTT Mirror.
  • The redundant spoiler.
  • When you open the redundant spoiler, the formatting changes, the OTT Mirror source and instructions vanish, but you get two images4.
Those are four somethings, but I have a feeling that I missed the important stuff.

Hello, Image?
Can you read this from the moon?
I am posting this to the OTT in 2014, hoping that it will find you in the future.
We could ENHANCE the messages you've sent backwards to us,
so we are ready to receive more of them.

Redundant diff results:

That should have been 2014, not 1014
This is what I noticed:

The javascript isn't mine. The waitback machine adds it.

It vanishes because I forgot to update the C-generated spoiler html  . Doesn't anything else change afterspoiler? Look closer. Click again.

When you
Spoiler:
keep clicking on Show/Hide until n reaches 33, you get a different result:
Code: Select all
N = [  ]
This button was supposed to be red: [DON'T CLICK]

Also, enhance:  [  ] [ENHANCE!]

Of course, first thing I did was clicking the first button... Interesting result, but not the right one, I think. Similar for the second.
I then tried various values in both input fields, but no luck.
Mystery unsolved.

  • the spoiler vanishes,
  • the OTT Mirror source and instructions come back,
  • and the hidden input fields of the form change from ?n=1, o=4? to ?n=4?.
This doesn't ring a bell for me.

I also tried to ENHANCE the redundant images, but did not find anything.
I have a feeling that I am searching in a wrong direction.

Waiting for ideas,

EDIT: New observation:
When I open the spoiler again, the ?Viewed 1190 times? text below the redundant image counts up.

By using the source I found out that

the second button always leads to http://1190.bicyclesonthemoon.dnsd.info/pro/bluenh/nh.png, independent of what you enter in the field.

Well, it leads to http://1190.bicyclesonthemoon.dnsd.info/pro/bluenh/nh.png?i=value_of_input_field which looks like a static URL, but could show something different for a certain value of i. (Probably not, though.)

Following my own advice,

I entered 1190 for N and pressed the first button.
I found this.
Same for other values of N, including strings like ?ENHANCE?.

Spoiler:
Yeah, that was obviously the first value I tried too... Didn't work, nor did any other I tried. (I haven't tried scripting all values from 0..65535, that'd be cheating. ;) And we don't know for sure it is expecting a 16-bit integer, although I expect it does, since...)

Yup, the number of times viewed is always 1189+n (modulo 65536). n, the number of times the spoiler was clicked, also rolls over to 0 after 65535.

I hope in the future someone has tried to enhance balthasar's puzzly posts. I have no enhance skills, so I am no help whatsoever.

Of course someone tried html-injecting and entered
Code: Select all
<a href="http://xkcd.com/1190">1190</a></body></html>
in the input field. :) But thanks to Little Bobby Tables I was prepared.

Of course, the first I did was to try to ENHANCE ?EVERYTHING? on http://1190.bicyclesonthemoon.dnsd.info/redundant?spoiler=show&n=32, but I just get the same ENHANCEd PNG as usual. Same for ?everything?, and similar for the ?DON'T CLICK? button.
Next, I tried safewords with both buttons:
Code: Select all
RuBisCo
rubisco
RUBISCO
RibuloseBisphosphateCarboxylaseoxygenase
ribulosebisphosphatecarboxylaseoxygenase
RIBULOSEBISPHOSPHATECARBOXYLASEOXYGENASE
Same result. (Read: No result.)

For decree: My current research project is an online activity RELATED to the OTT. Once there will be something to present I'll announce it here. Hopefully it will be a valuable contribution to the OTT, so OTTers can engage in it even inside the OTT. We'll see.

The RELATED one did not work.
Also tried the number of the OtherComic (1039). Nope.
Does anymolpy have a standardni transliteration of the safeword below?ni: I am aware of the latin and the CAS transliteration, but there might be more. We need one which unifies them all, so we can enter that in the web form on the moon.

How I found it:

AFAICT this suggests to search in the OTT MIRROR for the safeword.
(So far I ?only? searched in the OTT itself.)

Okay:
mirror-search-1.png
First I only found those safewords we already know.

But then:
mirror-search-2.png
The mirror reminded me of a story with yet another safeword. :)
(Hmm? now I can also find it in the OTT itself. How could I overlook it last time?
That must be a conspiracy!)

Trying that one gave me:
ni-20140722-1146.png
(This is the frame #0 balthasar_s mentions below.
It's title text reads: ?I'd highly recommend following the first commandment.?
I didn't take it as part of the ?something? it mentions, so I didn't ONG it at first.)

The URL of this is http://1190.bicyclesonthemoon.dnsd.info/ongoing.htm.
If you wait and refresh it, it displays a new frame from time to time.
(Hmm? this reminds me of something. What was it again? ;))

Trying to view the future reveals something which was already sent to us from the future:
